When Chi was a little girl in Taiwan, her mother made her memorize their new address on Happiness Road. From that childhood moment, to moving to the U.S. as an adult, and then having to return home after her grandmother’s passing, Chi continues to ask, “What is happiness?”

TAP-Seattle would like to use the Seattle Taiwanese American Film Festival (STAFF) as a platform for aspiring Taiwanese American filmmakers to showcase their films. We are proud to present four short films that were featured at last year’s Taiwanese American Film Festival in Los Angeles, hosted by TAP-LA.
Four female protagonists encountered various life challenges – from being an Asian in a segregated America, adapting to a new country, working abroad, facing death and family affairs later in life. These stories from West to East showcase women’s journey through society, family, workplace, and love. The short films featured are: June, Jie Jie, Midnight Carnival, and Guo Mie.
**There will be a panel discussion following the screening of the four short films.

Synopsis:
During the Cold War, 28 pilots of the Black Cat Squadron joined a secret mission which has a lower survival rate than Russian Roulette. Their life stories beg the unanswerable question: What makes a real hero?
Over the course of a fourteen-year mission, seven pilots lost their lives in training, and three on the mission. Another two were shot down and captured, never seeing home for more than two decades.
45 years after the last mission of the Black Cat team, the documentary speaks out the voice of this era again. It gives us a gentle reminder not to forget people who have guarded us.
Q&A with Director Jonathan Yang after the documentary screening.
Director Jonathan Yang started his career in film in 1991. He is the top director for commercial ads and music videos for Taiwan’s hottest singers. This is his first documentary, fulfilling a childhood dream of his. Fascinated by the story these veterans had to tell, he spent six long years collecting films, data, and interviewing people. Take the this chance to have a conversation with Director Yang!

Synopsis:
Our Youth in Taiwan brings together an interesting trio—a Taiwanese star leader in Sunflower Movement, a celebrity Chinese student [participant] in the movement and a Taiwanese documentary filmmaker. Each of them somehow shares their youthful ambition and idealism through the biggest social movement in Taiwan in recent years. The documentary illustrates “a subtly emotive memoir and ode to these days of being naive and fearless.”
Furthermore, the film is about a generation of young people and their struggles to recognize their changing attitudes and hopes toward realizing social change when facing reality.
Q&A with Director Yue Fu after the documentary screening.
Director Yue Fu graduated from Institute of Sound and Image Studies of Tainan National University of Arts in 2008. “People tend to think this film is about politics, but it is actually about youth.” Her documentaries mainly explore the younger generations’ ideas and attitudes towards Taiwan’s political and economic landscape. Her films have received several awards, most recently Best Documentary at Golden Horse Awards and Taipei Film Awards for “Our Youth In Taiwan”. Take this chance to have a conversation with Director Fu!
