Abstract:
We see strong super smart Chinese engineers in our top universities and the most competitive American companies. But as you look at the population composition of Asian leaders in the higher levels at these companies, the proportion drops. Why is this? Are Asians less suitable for broad team leadership than they are as line engineers? Or are there other factors that hold Asians back? Chee Chew discusses his experiences and observations about Asians in the American culture; from his upbringing in the American south, through college and in the computer science industry. He’ll share what he has found that has worked for him, and stumbling blocks he has encountered. The end goal is to understand how to adapt to succeed in the American culture while remaining true to who you are.

Bio:
Chee was born in Malaysia to ethnic Chinese parents, but moved to the US when he was 3. He and his parents spent most of his childhood in the deep south of South Carolina then Kentucky. His parents tried to impart Chinese values while his surroundings tried to pull him away. After high school, Chee left Kentucky for MIT in Cambridge, MA. He worked most summers in Hewlett Packard’s Labs in Palo Alto, CA. In his work career, after graduating college with a Master’s & Bachelor’s degree in computer science, he joined Microsoft as a developer working on Windows 95’s Shell & UI. He worked on Internet Explorer 3, 4, and 5 until 1998, when he became the Dev Manager of the Mobile Devices team and lead the release of the Pocket PC IPaq; a pivotal release in the competition with Palm Pilot. Over the next several years he became the General Manager of Windows Mobile and the executive sponsor of the Palm Treo/Microsoft relationship. His last project at Microsoft was as General Manager of Games for Windows LIVE with the Xbox organization. While in the Windows Mobile and Xbox, Chee established several joint projects with Microsoft China and Microsoft India engineering offices. His projects were heralded as model projects for offshore engineering.

In 2007, Chee joined Google where he currently works as an Engineering Director in the Kirkland office. He is responsible for client efforts in Kirkland and Kirkland-China projects. Chee is married with 2 kids aged 9 and 3. He enjoys karate, soccer, photography and traveling to new places. He’s lived in the Seattle area for 14 years.
